What Are BiPap Machines Used For?

A BiPAP machine — also known as a bilevel positive airway pressure device — is a type of breathing machine that is used to help people who have breathing difficulties and sleep disorders, such as central sleep apnea. While CPAP machines are designed to provide one consistent flow of air during each breath, BiPAP machines alternate between two different air pressure settings — a higher setting when you inhale and a lower setting when you exhale. This can make it easier for some people to breathe and sleep.

Other Conditions Treated By BiPAP Machines

In addition to central sleep apnea, BiPAP machines are also used to treat other conditions that cause difficulty breathing, such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea — a condition in which the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing pauses in breathing
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) — a group of lung diseases that make it difficult to breathe
  • Asthma — a chronic lung condition that causes wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness
  • Heart failure — a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs

Non-Invasive Ventilation

BiPAP machines can also be used to provide non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for people who are unable to breathe on their own. NIV is a type of mechanical ventilation that uses a mask instead of a breathing tube. It is used for people who have acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, or COPD.

Use In Hospitals and Nursing Homes

BiPAP machines are often used in hospitals and nursing homes, but they can also be purchased for use at home. If you have a sleep disorder or a respiratory condition that makes it difficult to breathe, talk to your doctor about whether a BiPAP machine may be right for you.
